BREAKDOWN

Julia - Leading

Female, Mid-Late 20s
Independent, modern woman of the early 1900s. A bit of a rebel. She is determined to follow her dream to be a composer and professional musician, and isn’t concerned about the sacrifices she must make to do so. Probably the least talented of the three young women, but the most passionate and committed. She does many things other women just don’t do, like wear pants and drive her own car.
Mezzo soprano with large range (F3 to E5); Strong parts singing required; Ability to play piano preferred by not required.

May - Leading

Female, Early-Mid 20s
A talented composer who publishes a large volume of songs in just three years. She is torn between her desire to pursue her music and lead a conventional life as an upper-class wife and mother. She was raised in a privileged, musical family, and educated at the best schools. She marries at age 20, and her husband does not support her work as a composer. She tries to balance both, but eventually gives up her music after her husband’s ultimatum.
Soprano (B3 to A5), with lower extension; Strong parts singing required; Ability to play piano preferred but not required.

Cora - Supporting

Female, Late 30s-Mid 40s
Vaudeville singer and comedian in the early 1900s. Creative, independent, and opportunistic. She has no regrets about living a performer’s life, but realistic about the sacrifices required. She is an unknowing mentor/inspiration to Julia. She has a strong attachment to her mother, and ultimately leaves performing to care for her as she is dying.
Mezzo soprano (A3 to D5); Strong parts singing required.

Gladys - Supporting

Female, Late teens-early 20s.
Young music prodigy who tags along with the older girls. She is not serious about her music but goes along for a time because everyone else is doing it. She ultimately choses a conventional married life and gives up her music. She has no conflict or regrets about this choice.
Mezzo soprano (F3 to C5); Strong parts singing required.
