Breakdown

In Topher Payne’s biting comedy, Perfect Arrangement, it’s the 1950s and the age of the Red Scare. The Martindales and the Baxters have manufactured a life as peppy as a sitcom, right down to the corny jokes and occasional product placement… but when a co-worker at the US State Department discovers their deepest secret, the worlds of “I Love Lucy” and Edward R. Murrow clash in hilarious, ironic, and genuinely moving ways. Long before Stonewall, nothing is as it seems in this New York Premiere previously staged to great acclaim in Washington and Atlanta.

SEEKING: A GREAT ENSEMBLE OF ACTORS WITH IMPECCABLE COMIC TIMING

BOB MARTINDALE
(40-45) A WWII veteran, reserved. A solid man's man. Good-humored and well-mannered. Sexy with an unexpected darkness. Seeking a real leading man with Star Power.

MILLIE MARTINDALE
(late 20s to mid 30s) Bob's wife. Plays The pretty but ditzy/quirky wife in public, but actually very quick-witted and observant. Smart enough to maintain the act, and beautiful enough to sell it. She has impeccable comic timing.

NORMA BAXTER
(mid to late 30s) She’s a driven career woman - The knowing, efficient, classy dame. A secretary at the State Department who could just as easily be Secretary of State. A smart woman who's great with a wisecrack and level-headed in a bind. Should play a few years older than her husband, Jim.

JIM BAXTER
(late 20s to early 30s) Norma's husband. Slightly younger than Norma. A prankster type, always ready with a comeback. A high school teacher with lots of energy. A little wired, good with a plan. Ideally, has a short and/or compact build – think the funny sidekick.

THEODORE SUNDERSON
(50s) The boss. Bombastic, loud, filled with hot air, and a little overbearing. A windbag. A blowhard. Great comic timing, but also needs to get serious and scary.

KITTY SUNDERSON
(40s-50s) Ted's wife. She’s the oldest woman in the room, and also the most adolescent. Legitimately ditzy. Her brain seems to work on a totally different wavelength than the rest of the world. Very sweet, very genuine, with a Mid-Western sensibility. Just doesn't quite get it. Great comedienne.

BARBARA GRANT
(40s to early 50s) A formidable opponent. No-nonsense, beautiful, brilliant, and a little scary. Sexual and sexy. A true tri-sexual, she’ll try anything…once.
