Breakdown

Preparation:

Actor auditions:
Prepare 2 brief contrasting monologues. There may only be time to perform one. Contemporary material requested. Some may be asked to stay for cold readings.

Singing auditions:
Prepare 2 brief songs (one up-tempo; one ballad). There may be time to perform one. Some may be asked to stay for the dance call. Bring appropriate dancewear and (if you have them) dance shoes.

Singing and Acting: If you wish to audition for both musicals and plays, then prepare 1 brief song and 1 brief contemporary monologue and attend during the “singing” audition time-frame. No accompanist is provided during the Actor auditions.

Dancer auditions:
Be warmed and ready to dance. Wear appropriate dancewear. Have ballet, tap, & character shoes. Some may be asked to stay and sing. Prepare 16 bars of an up-tempo musical theatre song. Bring sheet music in correct key; accompanist provided, but will not transpose.

DAD
MALE. 40 to 55. Range: A2 - Eb4. Billy's stoic father. Widowed miner struggling with maintaining a household in lieu of a work strike. Is still deeply scarred by death of his wife. Billy's dancing initially sends him into a rage but learns to support his son. Geordie accent required.

TONY
MALE. 18 to 25. Range: D3 - F4. Billy's brother. Lazy but passionate miner. Hotheaded & scrappy with seemingly no regard of respect for his father, although shares his father’s disapproval of dance. Geordie accent required.

GRANDMA
FEMALE. 60 to 70. Range: F#3 - F#4. Billy's very eccentric grandmother. Forgetful & a little aloof. Despite her inattention, harbors a humorously bitter resentment towards her dead abusive husband but has found solace through dance. Geordie accent required.

MRS. WILKINSON
FEMALE. 40 to 50. Range: Gb3 - Bb5. Local ballet teacher who eventually becomes Billy's mentor. Hardened, mouthy. Actually has capacity for caring when she sees promise in Billy. Believes in power of personal expression through dance. Needs solid actress with comic chops. Geordie accent required.

ADULT ENSEMBLE
8-10 MALE and 4-5 FEMALE. 25-45. All vocal types. Ensemble will play Miners , Police Officers, Royal Ballet School Members. All smaller roles and understudies will be cast from the ensemble.

FATHER BRENDAN FLYNN
MALE. 35-50. Middle-career priest. Although has bounced around from congregation to congregation, he is well liked, articulate, personable.

SISTER JAMES
FEMALE. 20 – 30. Young impressionable nun. Enthusiastic but inexperienced teacher. Caught between her intellect & feelings as well as between Sister Aloysius and Father Flynn.

MRS. MULLER
AFRICAN AMERICAN FEMALE. 30 – 40. Mother of Donald Muller, an introverted and somewhat effeminate boy who is also the first black student after transferring from the public schools.

PHIL DAVIS
MALE. 30 – 40. Range: Bari-Tenor. (Danny Kaye in the movie) Strong song-and-dance comic performer. Must be strong solo tapper. The fun loving side of the song and dance team Wallace and Davis.

BETTY HAYES
FEMALE. 30 – 40. Range: Chest mix with Soprano extension. (Rosemary Clooney in the movie) Female singer in crooner style; a sense of quiet beauty and charm. Must be a strong mover/dancer. The sensible, responsible half of the up and coming act The Hayes Sisters.

JUDY HAYES
FEMALE. 25 – 35. Range: Chest mix. (Vera-Ellen in the movie). Major song and dance performer; flirty and youthful sensibility. Must be equally strong in jazz and tap. Adorable, spirited half of the up and coming act The Hayes Sisters.

GENERAL HENRY WAVERLY
MALE. 50 – 65. Range: Baritone. Retired US Army General still adjusting to civilian life. Now runs an Inn in Vermont. Beneath his curmudgeonly exterior lies a heart of gold. Limited singing.

MARTHA WATSON
FEMALE. 40 – 60. Range: Mezzo with strong belt. Once Broadway star, now the General’s housekeeper at the Inn. An irrepressible meddler

ENSEMBLE
MALE and FEMALE. 25-50. All vocal types. Diverse cross-section of energetic and charismatic actors/singers of all ages who move or dance very well with broad vocal range. Very large ensemble (15-20) in this show. Every ensemble member will play many small parts and characters including Ralph Sheldrake, Rita and Rhoda, Ezekiel Foster, Club-goers, stage managers, show girls, agents, soldiers, television execs, towns people, etc.

MALE. 50’s. Vulgar & egotistical junkman. Has come to Washington full of fraudulent schemes. Loud & abusive of those around him. Soon finds his crooked machinations going awry when he crosses her. Must be able to be loud and intimidating but understand comic timing.

PAUL VERRALL
MALE. 30 - 40. Movie-star-handsome, idealistic reporter. Has been investigating political skullduggery in Washington. Hired by Harry Brock to educate Billie Dawn; eventually sees past her rough exterior and falls in love with her.

ED DEVERY
MALE. 50’s. Harry Brock’s lawyer. 30 years ago was considered a man destined for greatness. Now, with Brock as only client, the future looks far less bright—but with a salary of $100,000 a year and plenty of fine Scotch, Devery is past caring.

SENATOR NORVAL HEDGES
MALE. 60’s. Pale, thin, worn down. A nervous politician currently on the payroll of Harry Brock, who plans on using the senator for his own means.

MRS. HEDGES
FEMALE. 50’s. Typical political wife of Senator Norval Hedges.

EDDIE BROCK
MALE. 40’s. Brother of Harry. Often handles the little details of his older brother’s business, “greasing the wheels,” as it were, with tips and pay-offs.

THE ASSISTANT MANAGER
MALE. 30 - 40. Very professional. Knows who to keep from noticing anything his wealthier customers are up to.

FEMALE. 30’s. Maid in the Washington hotel. Will play other roles as well.

AMY MARCH

MARMEE MARCH

FEMALE. Age: 40’s. Vocal range: Eb3 – Eb5. The girls' mother. She is the strong backbone of the family, who is courageous in spite of the difficult odds she faces. Will double as other character(s).

PROFESSOR BHAER

MALE. Age range: 30’s. Vocal range: G2 – F#4. German Professor who exemplifies proper manners. He is a boarder in Mrs. Kirk's boarding house and eventually falls in love with Jo.

LAURIE LAURENCE

MALE. Age: 20’s. Vocal range: Bb2 – Bb4. The bright-eyed boy-next-door with considerable charm. He loves Jo but later ultimately falls in love with Amy.

AUNT MARCH

FEMALE. Age: 50-60. Vocal range: E3 – F5. A formidable, over-bearing matron and great-aunt to the March sisters. The wealthy socialite in town. Will double as other character(s).

MR JOHN BROOKS

MALE. Age: 50-60. Another nationally known attorney who was once Brady's closest friend and political confidante. A great mind. A thoughtful and witty humanist. Based on Clarence Darrow.

BERTRAM CATES

MALE. Age: 25-30. A Hillsboro high school teacher who has taught the theory of evolution in violation of a state law banning its teaching in classrooms.

E. K. HORNBECK

MALE. Age: 35-45. A reporter for the fictional Baltimore Herald newspaper. He is a cynical, humorous and sarcastic observer of human hypocricy; and deeply opposed to religious belief. Based on H L Menken.

REVEREND JEREMIAH BROWN

MALE. Age: 40-55. A fire and brimstone fundamentalist Protestant Christian preacher of indeterminate denomination who believes in Biblical literalism. He is widowed, and has a daughter.

THE JUDGE

MALE. Age: 50’s. A local county court judge who is subtly sympathetic to Rev. Brown's views.

TOM DAVENPORT

MALE. Age: 35 - 45. The local district attorney who prosecutes Bertram Cates.

THE MAYOR

MALE. Age: 40 - 60. The top elected official of Hillsboro who is openly supportive of the Rev. Brown but also deeply political and concerned about the economic future of his town.

ADULT ENSEMBLE

MALE and FEMALE. Age: 25-50. Looking for a diverse, cross-section of talented actors to play multiple roles in a very large ensemble. Every ensemble member will play several smaller roles and characters including Rachel Brown, Sam Meeker, Sarah Brady, Mrs. Krebs, Mr. Bannister, Harry Esterbrook, etc., etc., etc.
