Seeking:
Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr.
African American Male, 39. Nobel Peace prize winning civil rights movement leader – We want the audience to walk away from this performance with a clearer understanding of Dr. King as a man, and a greater respect for the icon that created such change in our nation, while establishing this remarkable inspiring legacy. The actor must be able to inhabit Dr. King in a convincing moment to moment human way, with all of his foibles and humor, and yet fulfill the plays climax, convincing us that he is the great orator who gave us the passion behind “I have been to the mountaintop”.
Camae
African American Female, 20s. A maid at Lorraine Motel. Camae is not as she first appears. Initially, she must convince us that she has simply been sent up to Dr. King’s room to deliver coffee, cigarettes and a newspaper. As the story unfolds we discover that she is really a messenger from God who has come to calm Dr. King and to help him to understand his role as a martyr. An angel of sorts. She is “beautiful”, and at times seductive, unabashed, playful, frightened, angry and opinionated. She plays the role of mother, lover, therapist and provocateur.
