Breakdown

MERCURY FUR

This riveting dystopian vision by the author of The Fastest Clock in the Universe (New Group 1998) was a succes de scandale in London when it premiered in 2005, and is now widely considered a masterpiece. In a country ravaged by warring factions and a hallucinogenic-drug epidemic, brothers Elliott and Darren, with the help of the ruthless Spinx, throw parties for the super-rich in an abandoned apartment building, in which they help the guest acts out his fantasies. But what if the fantasy is more than they can bear?

All characters need working-class London accents (East End preferably).

Elliot
Male, to play 19. Working class. Whip-smart and educated, highly organized and dependable, a caretaker and peacemaker – but also tightly wound, angry and crushed by painful memories. Was a dealer, and now works for Spinx throwing parties. Elder brother of Darren. Son of the Duchess. Emotionally/romantically attached to Lola.

Darren
Male, 18+ to play 16. Working class. A bit brain-damaged and emotionally scarred from a violent attack, so depends on and follows Elliot closely. Prone to wandering (both mental and physical) and seriously addicted to drugs. Younger brother of Elliot. Son of the Duchess.

Naz
Male, 18+ to play 15. Working class. Upbeat, eager and engaging, as well as savvy and a real survivor. Observant and empathetic, but tends to shake off the horrors around him. Has lived on the streets for some time.

Party Piece
Male, 9 to 11. Working class. An innocent boy. Doped up to be primed as an object for the violent fantasy of the Party Guest, which take place offstage. Alert in a few important scenes, he’s vivacious and friendly, but terribly scared. Knows Darren from the neighborhood.

Lola
Male, to play 19. Working class. A transvestite. Designs and decorates the parties for Elliot and Spinx. Sweet, willful and a bit of a diva. Avoids any painful situation. Emotionally/romantically attached to Elliot, but dependent on her brother Spinx.

Spinx
Male to play 21. Working class. The unquestioned leader of this group, stylish with a bit of gangster about him. Has a violent temper, and rules through intimidation, but also loyal, indomitable and in some ways heroic. Smitten with the Duchess, he looks after her and his sister Lola.

Duchess
Female, to play mid-30s to 40s. Working class. Blind from a head injury, and prone to seizures. Formerly an ordinary, loving working mom, now living in fantasies (often of The Sound of Music) and usually high. Both are fed by Spinx, who she relies on to keep her from frequent panic attacks. Mother of Elliot and Darren.

Party Guest
Male, to play 20s-40s. Raised working class, now middle class and rising. A confident young businessman, out for a thrill. Not especially vicious, but genuinely unconcerned with the morality of the situation or his actions. Pumped up by the sense of impending doom.
