BREAKDOWN
Shylock (Male or Female, any ethnicity) - Must relish the challenge of exploring one of Shakepeare’s greatest roles. Is a business-person, that has endured a lot of tragedy (wife passing away, single-parent, watching violence and hatred against the Jew’s happen in the world), but still keeps a pleasant temperament until their daughter is taken away from them.
Bassiano/Tubal (M) -- Bassiano is very good looking Venetian. Everyone wants to be Bassiano. Gambler, dreamer, spendthrift and suitor to Portia. Tubal is a wealthy Jew of Venice, who lends money to Shylock for the 3,000 ducats.
Gratiano (M) -- Bassiano’s friend. “Frat Boy” -- class clown, and is very well aware of it.
Lorenzo/Prince of Aragon (M) -- Lorenzo “steals” Shylocks daughter Jessica away from him. Prince of Aragon is a suitor to Portia--think Dungeons and Dragons Game Master.
Jessica (F, young) -- Shylock’s daughter, in love with Lorenzo. Beautiful and defiant--leaves her father to elope with Lorenzo, though still feels like an outsider after she converts to Christianity.
Salanio/Nerissa (F) -- Salanio is a well-connected Gentleman in Venice. Nerissa is a fun-loving, bawdy maid to Portia.
Portia (F) -- Wealthy heiress of Belmont. A bit condescending towards her suitors, but madly in love with Bassanio. Disguises herself as a lawyer to help Bassiano.
Antonio/Lancelot (M) -- The Merchant of Venice. Wealthy and in love with Bassanio. Lancelot is Shylock’s man, very funny.
Salerio/Duke/Prince of Morroco (M) -- Salerio is a well-connected Gentleman in Venice. Prince of Morroco is a dignified, but funny suitor to Portia. Duke is a judge in the case of the Merchant of Venice.
