Breakdown

How do we make the right decision when there is no clear “right?” It’s a quandary seasoned social worker Caroline faces every day. But her newest case is proving to be her toughest yet, and the fate of baby Luna Gale hangs in the balance. This riveting, suspenseful, and topical play from Pulitzer Prize finalist Rebecca Gilman plunges us headfirst into the turbulent waters of parenthood, faith and love.

Seeking:

CAROLINE
(Female, Mid 50’s, Any Race/Ethnicity) A seasoned social worker with a dry sense of humor. Gives her all to her cases, despite being overworked and close to burning out. Finds herself in the grey area between professional standards and her personal beliefs—or lack thereof.

CINDY
(Female, 40s, Caucasian). Karlie’s evangelical mother. A nurse’s assistant. Not afraid to fight for her beliefs. Wants to adopt baby Luna to ensure she’s raised in a drug-free, Christian home.

LOURDES
(Female, 18, Latina). One of Caroline’s cases whom she really believes in. Recently left the foster care system. Struggles to balance the weight of Caroline’s expectations with her own personal desires.

CLIFF
(Male, 30s, Any race/Ethnicity) Caroline’s supervisor. Though younger and less experienced, he’s very committed to his job. Insists that following the rules is the only way to bring order to a chaotic system.
