BREAKDOWN

SEEKING:

Strong Dancer Singers in all varieties of dance. Tumbling is also a plus. Dancers must be excellent singers too.

Characters are Males & Females, 20-39. Strong dancers that sing well. Knowledge of Latin dances, partnering, and any form a street styles are a plus. In truth, we are seeking people that can understudy the roles listed below and also be dancers.

UNDERSTUDIES FOR:

Usnavi

Male, 20-29, Owner of the De La Vega Bodega. Our hip-hop narrator. A charismatic and energetic son of immigrants (now passed on) who dreams of making enough money to go back home to the Dominican Republic, all the while….his heart has a wonderful ride on his sleeve. Must both sing and rap well.

Nina

Female, 18-25. Daughter of Puerto Rican Parents. Intelligent….well, book-smart. Would conquer the world if she knew how, but she’s hard on herself. She’s learning what to hang on to and what to let go of. Strong high belter with strong mix.

Vanessa

Female, 18-25. Non-Caucasian. Worthy of every single ‘cat call’ she’s received. Vivacious as she is sensitive. Works at the salon. Has the feeling of someone who is doing this life all on her own, but might not want to. Excellent belter/mixer.

Benny

Male, 20-29. African American. Taxi stand employee/aspiring businessman, pleased that Nina has returned home. He’s at home on any street in NY, funny and full of personality; great singer with a feel for pop/hip-hop style.

Sonny

Male, 18-21ish. Usnavi’s cousin. overly streetwise, a goofy genius, funny and easily excitable. His passion makes you smile. A tenor that can rap well.

Kevin

Male, 38-59. Hails from Puerto Rico. Nina’s Father and Owner of Rosario’s Car Service. Aggressively self protecting businessman/ proud overprotective father combo. Tradition is what has gotten this leader of the family this far, so that’s how it should stay. Extremely hardworking and proud. Strong Baritone.

Camilla (Supporting):

Female, 38-59. Hails from Puerto Rico. Nina’s Mother and co-owner of Rosario’s car service. Strong and loyal to her family and it’s traditions, yet able to evolve while the world changes fast around her. Strong Singer, probably a mezzo.

Abuela Claudia (Supporting):

Female, 60-79. Raised Usnavi, but not actually his grandmother by blood. In fact, she has this relationship with everyone on the block. Gives so much love to all, that you know she deserves the best future possible. Must sing well.

Daniela (Supporting):

Female, 30-39. Owner of Daniela’s Salon. Loud and Proud and moving on. Has fought a good fight to make her version of the American Dream work. Loves her Latina roots and everything that comes with that. Strong Alto.

Carla (Supporting):

Female, 20-29. Works at the Salon. Young. Feels things deeply for all situations…whether she’s deep or not is still in question. Regardless, you always want her at the party. Strong mix/belter. Has a lyric where she describes her self as Chile-Dominican-Rican, but she always says she’s from Queens.

Graffiti Pete (Supporting):

Male, 13-25. An Artist. Respects this giant city -that he makes a better place by being in it. Man of few words, but great actions. Could be any ethnicity, but must feel like Washington Heights is where he wants to always call home. Needs to dance well, and sing/rap.

Piragua (Supporting):

Male, 30-39. Latin self employed piraqua man in this neighborhood. He’s as fun as he is funny. He adds even more color to this large non traditional family. Tenor.
