BREAKDOWN

Far From The Madding Crowd is a musical adapted from the Thomas Hardy novel. Set in 1870 rural England (Dorset area), it charts the journey of Bathsheba Everdene, a young woman of 20, struggling to make her own way in a world that dictates women’s roles and behaviors.

Seeking:

BATHSHEBA EVERDENE

Female (20), Soprano. Any ethnicity. Actress must be convincing as a 20 year old in looks and essence. Exceptionally beautiful and provocative without knowing it, she is determined to run the farm bequeathed to her by an uncle on her own. She works hard to be seen as the competent, self-confident mistress of Weatherbury Farm. However her youth and stubborn nature cause unforeseen challenges

GABRIEL OAK

Male. (Late 20s-early 30s), Bari-tenor. Any ethnicity. The shepherd whose marriage proposal Bathsheba turns down and who is reduced to working for her after he loses his farm. He is strong-willed and proud, and has a quiet strength that should not be mistaken for shyness or weakness. He's named Oak for a reason. He sees Bathsheba’s faults, yet still loves and admires her.

FRANK TROY

Male (mid-late 20s), Tenor. Any ethnicity. A Sergeant in the Dragoons. He loves Fanny as much as he can love any woman. He is extremely good looking and has an enticing sensuality which he uses to his advantage. The bastard son of a gentleman, he yearns for the ease of a gentleman’s life but not its responsibilities. He's impulsive and doesn’t consider the consequences of his actions, bringing tragedy to himself and others.

WILLIAM BOLDWOOD

Male (40s). Bass-Baritone. Any ethnicity. The wealthy owner of the neighboring farm. His reserve masks an awkwardness with women. An honorable man who is destroyed by his obsessive love for Bathsheba.

FANNY ROBIN

Female (18). High exquisite soprano. She fair and blond. Troy’s fiancee. An uncomplicated farm girl who has lived at Weatherbury all her life. She adores Troy, faults and all, and is sure that, in the end, he will marry her and make their liaison respectable. Sadly her life ends in tragedy.
