HENRY CONDELL: 40s, a feisty, loyal friend and devoted husband, an actor in The King’s Men, should be experienced with Shakespeare text and have facility with language. Any ethnicity.
RICHARD BURBAGE: 50s, seasoned lion of the stage, physically imposing, loud and proud, a showoff who takes himself seriously. /BEN JONSON: poet laurate of England, highly intelligent and gifted with words, friend and rival of Shakespeare, always drunk but hides it well, surprisingly weepy, feels generally superior to others. Any ethnicity.
HORATIO: friend of Hamlet, no court status, attended university at Wittenburg. Any ethnicity.
REBECCA HEMINGES: mid to late 40s, John Heminges wife, a strong, wise and constant woman who has weathered much but loves her husband, sons and god, wifely and domestic. / ANNE HATHAWAY SHAKESPEARE: 60, Shakespeare’s now ailing wife, strong willed and classy, a survivor. Any ethnicity.
ELIZABETH CONDELL: mid to late 40s, Henry Condell’s wife, savvy and fun, understands actors, loves her husband, and is a good friend to Rebecca. /EMILIA BASSANO LANIER: Fiery Italian feminist poet, independent woman, lover of life and former lover of Shakespeare, dark hair and gorgeous, of the nobility, of another world, does not confine herself to the rules of society, free and open.
RALPH CRANE: younger, no older than 40, humble scribe of The King’s Men, quick, sure, quiet, lower status, comic relief. / BARMAN: ruffian / COMPOSITOR: works for William Jaggard / FRANCISCO: a soldier and guardsman of Elsinore. Any ethnicity.
JOHN HEMINGES: 50, the financial manager of The King’s Men and tapster of the Old Globe Tap House, reasonable friend, a good man if serious, heartfelt, devoted to his wife. Any ethnicity.
ALICE: 35, John Heminges daughter and alewife, knows everyone, hangs out with the boys, adventurous. / SUSANNAH SHAKESPEARE: 30, daughter of Shakespeare, a good girl if somewhat resentful of her father’s absence growing up. Any ethnicity.
