Breakdown

DODGE, 70s, white. The faded patriarch, married to Halie. Formerly prosperous farmer fallen on hard times, has given up appearances. Thin and sickly looking, prone to coughing fits, physically somewhat helpless. A crafty drunk, and sharp-tongued. Once formidable, he’s given up on most things and gone slack and bitter. ROLE CAST.

HALIE, mid-60s, white. The still forceful matriarch, married to Dodge. In contrast to him, tries to keep up appearances, and keep the chaos at bay. Lives in the past, obsessed with third son who died. But when she is being social, regains her former strength. ROLE CAST.

TILDEN, mid-late 40s, white. Halie and Dodge’s older son. Athletic as a kid (played halfback), but then got in trouble, including jail time. Profoundly burned-out and displaced, he’s lost the purpose or direction he once had, and dwells on recent failures that sent him limping back home. Damaged and distressed, worn down by experience, he’s now almost meek and cooperative.

RADLEY, late 30s to early 40s, white. Halie and Dodge’s youngest son. Big and strong, from physical work and from compensating for his wooden leg, and every inch a bully. With Dodge and Tilden weakened, he’s become the dominant one, and relishes it. Tortures his father, but is also dependent on his parents, and in awe of his mother. When his leg is taken from him, he loses his nerve.

VINCE, plays early to mid-20s, white. Tilden’s son, and Dodge and Halie’s only grandchild. An aspiring musician who lives in New York. Cut ties with his family some years earlier, but now hoping for a meaningful reunion. Impulsive and uncertain, eager for recognition, he also can take care of himself. Doesn’t know his own fragility, which comes out around his family.

SHELLY, plays 19 to mid-20s. Vince’s girlfriend. A New Yorker (either originally or at heart), she is unabashed, believes in her thinking and says what she thinks. Totally unaccustomed to the world of the play, and the family’s manners. But being a survivor, she adjusts and fights back. Good at reading and influencing men.

FATHER DEWIS, 60s. A very distinguished Catholic priest from the nearby town. He has a long knowledge of this family, their checkered history and their foibles. Likes his drink, and has a tight and somewhat inappropriate relationship with Halie. He’s out of his element, and doesn’t relish calling on his traditional authority. Liable to back down in a conflict.
