ON GOLDEN POND
By Ernest Thompson
Director: Susan D. Atkinson

First Rehearsal: January 2, 2019
Opening: January 24, 2019
Closing: February 10, 2019

On Golden Pond is a classic American comedy/drama that's every bit as touching, warm, and witty today as when it debuted on Broadway in 1979. Retired couple Ethel and Norman Thayer spend every summer at their home on Golden Pond. This year, their adult daughter visits, bringing along her 13-year-old son.

Seeking:

Norman Thayer, Jr.: Nearing his eightieth birthday, Norman is flirting with senility and is aware of it enough to use it to his advantage, usually in a humorous way. He is a curmudgeon, as he feels his age entitles him to be. He is very much in love with Ethel, his wife, but doesn’t quite know what to do about their daughter, Chelsea.

Ethel Thayer: Ten years younger than Norman, Ethel is a spritely, active woman who loves her husband completely and who is in love with simply being alive. She is caregiver, sweetheart, and friend to Norman.

Charlie Martin: The local delivery-by-boat mailman, Charlie is a long-time family friend and a typical Maine down-Easterner. Still single, he has had a life-long crush on Chelsea.

Chelsea Thayer Wayne: Attractive, divorced, and in her forties, Chelsea is still dealing with the lack of closeness between her and Norman. She is engaged to Bill Ray, whom she brings to meet her parents.

Billy Ray: The fourteen-year-old son of Bill Ray, he is a typical California teenager who comes to spend a month with Norman and Ethel on Golden Pond while his father and Chelsea are in Europe.

Bill Ray: Chelsea’s fiancé and Billy’s father, Bill is definitely not the outdoors type. He is trying his best to make a good impression on Norman and Ethel.
___________

THE SUNSHINE BOYS
By Neil Simon
Director: Keith Baker

First Rehearsal: February 19, 2019
Opening: March 14, 2019
Closing: March 31, 2019

Seeking:

Willie Clark: 65-80 one-half of the great vaudeville comedy team of Lewis & Clark; Willie is a bitter, sarcastic old man, but he hasn’t lost his comedic knack; he’s always dead-on with punch lines and timing; he appears self-absorbed and wrapped up in his own life, and doesn’t show any signs of sentimentality or empathy, yet there’s something wholly endearing about him.

Al Lewis: 65-80 the other half of Lewis & Clark; Al is the more timid straight man to Willie’s explosive temperament, yet he can dish it out on an equal level; he accepts the limitations of old age and has learned to enjoy his golden years; however, it’s obvious he misses his old partner and the good times they shared.

Ben Silverman: 35-45 Willie’s nephew and agent; Ben cares very much for his uncle and really looks up to him; he tries to find work for Willie, but Willie’s age and personality make this a very difficult task; a practical, hardworking family man, Ben really didn’t inherit any of his uncle’s sense of comedy.

Eddie: 21-30 a young production assistant; everything rolls down onto Eddie’s shoulders, and he’s carrying a great weight trying to get this production ready for broadcast.

Registered Nurse 45-60: A mature, woman who is nurturing, but doesn’t suffer fools. She enjoys her time caring for Willie, despite his grouchiness and prejudices. She seems to be the only person who breaks through his crusty exterior.

Nurse in Vaudeville Sketch 25-35: An actress playing a character in Willie and Al’s “doctor” routine. She plays a vamp in the vaudeville scene.

Patient: 30-50 an actor playing the role of a patient for the TV broadcast; overacting a bit, he often comes across as a hypochondriac.

THE CHRISTIANS
By Lucas Hnath
Director: Matt Pfeiffer

First Rehearsal: April 9, 2019
Opening: May 2, 2019
Closing: May 19, 2019

Twenty years ago, Pastor Paul’s church was nothing more than a modest storefront. Now he presides over a congregation of thousands, with classrooms for Sunday School, a coffee shop in the lobby, and a baptismal font as big as a swimming pool. Today should be a day of celebration. But Paul is about to preach a sermon that will shake the foundations of his church’s belief. A big-little play about faith in America—and the trouble with changing your mind.

Seeking:

Pastor Paul 40-50 a man of integrity, he is enormously charismatic with an inspiring presence; able to hold his congregation with his style and the depth of sermons; a thoughtful, deeply spiritual person with profound beliefs, caught in a serious crisis of faith and a new understanding about what he truly believes; actor must walk a fine line away from arrogance but maintain strong confidence and the righteousness of his convictions.

Elizabeth 40-50 his wife; intelligent, bound with deep conviction to her faith, confused but steady in her opposition to the changes Paul is outlining; deeply emotional but lacks sentimentality or neurosis; no “sweet little preacher’s wife”, she is a rock; disturbed and disappointed that Paul has made decisions without consulting her.

Joshua 30-40 the Associate Pastor; several years earlier he had come to the church as a confused and lost young person and was taken in and given a spiritual home which grew to a point where Pastor Paul elevated him to Associate Pastor; now with the changing tides swirling around Paul, Joshua challenges Paul’s leadership; needs a strong sense of integrity, honesty, directness without being abrasive or hostile, presenting facts without ironic distance from the reality of the situation.

Jay 50-65 a church elder; represents the financial and operational needs of the church, deeply respects Pastor Paul but quite alarmed that the controversy Paul has created with the congregation is wreaking havoc; he tries to remain a voice of reason as the situation worsens.

Jenny 30-40 a congregant; a working class, single mother struggling financially, she has found assistance and support within the church; is now deeply afraid of the impact of the controversy on her personal life as well as on the foundations of her faith; directly confronts Pastor Paul with challenging questions about the timing of his sermon and his decision to change the course of his teachings.
