Breakdown
ROLAND HAYES:
Male, African American, 30 – 40. A dramatic tenor/lyric baritone. Vocal range B Flat 2 to F 4. An attractive, classically trained operatic singer/actor who moves well and can sing in or learn to sing in German, Italian and French as well as Negro Spirituals. The first African American classically trained singer who became the highest paid concert singer in the world, predating Paul Robeson. He is a pioneering artist descended from slaves who became the first world-renowned, African American classical singer, who headlined at Carnegie Hall and wowed Europe's royalty. Through a series of flashbacks music propelled vignettes, the actor reveals Roland's life from the age of 10 to 55.
ANGEL MO:
Female, African American, 30 -50 An actor who can sing legit as well as full throated to capture the melodic warmth and evocative dimension of Roland's no nonsense God-fearing Christian mother. Vocal range A Flat 3 to D 5. Her voice is the first angelic voice we hear in the play. As a mother, she is the first to see the genius in her son, even though she wanted him to express it as a preacher. Angel Mo is a rock and domineering to the core. She was at first thoroughly resistant to Roland pursuing a singing career, but later on became the prime motivator in his life who coerced him onward and upward to fulfill his life's dream and destiny.
