Bad Jews By: Joshua Harmon
Critically acclaimed play asks questions about what you choose to believe, when you’re chosen. Bad Jews tells the story of Daphna Feygenbaum, a “Real Jew” with an Israeli boyfriend. When Daphne’s cousin Liam brings home his shiksa girlfriend Melody and declares ownership of their grandfather’s Chai necklace, a vicious and hilarious brawl over family, faith and legacy ensues. 2014 Lucille Lortel Award Winner/2012-13 Outer Critics Circle Award Nominee
> Daphna Feygenbaum – 22, Liam and Jonah’s first cousin. Intelligent, opinionated, acts like she is sure of herself…but she’s not so sure she is sure. Shows emotion even when she thinks she’s not. Can be funny, can be annoying. Depends on if you’re on her side at the moment. Lots of unruly hair which she is unable to tame. She makes it clear that she is seriously Jewish the moment she walks into a room.
> Liam Haber – 25, Daphna’s first cousin. An intellectual who prides himself on being a deep and open-minded thinker. Only thing is, he is always right. Jewish by birth, he is going for a PhD in Asian Studies at the University of Chicago. Not much of a sense of humor, battles a quick temper, and reserves his limited moments of tenderness for his girlfriend Melody.
>Jonah Haber – 21, Liam’s younger brother. He attends University of Vermont…occasionally. Maybe half the intellectual capacity of Liam, but twice the heart and a bit of brawn to go with it. Sees a lot, says little
>Melody – 24, Liam’s girlfriend. Cute as a button, not quite as deep. Has honorable intentions and is deeply devoted to Liam and the non-profit she works for. She could be lighting Shabbat candles and making matzo ball soup while speaking fluent Yiddish – and you would still know she is not Jewish.
