Breakdown

NOTE: Around the World in 80 Days is a love story and adventure extravaganza. This is a new version of the Jules Verne novel; not in any way based on the 1959 film. It will be performed in major US cities including New York and Los Angeles. The show tours in its own portable theatre space and will stay in each city for 7-11 weeks. The staging is completely environmental using multimedia as well as scenic devices based on Victorian Theatre.

All actors, unless otherwise noted must be superb comics.

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING PRINCIPAL ROLES:

MEN:

PHILEAS FOGG
(mid to late 30s): Good looking and appealing. Fogg is the quintessential, emotionally buttoned-up Victorian English gentleman. He follows order and tradition but also has keen sense of adventure. During his journey around the world in 80 days he faces extreme danger with a “stiff upper lip.” He is uncomfortable with women until he meets the beautiful South Asian princess Aouda. She slowly breaks down his reserve as he falls in love with her. Must be expert comic actor. While this is not a large singing role, he needs to have a confident baritone voice. We are not looking for talk singing a la Rex Harrison.

PASSEPARTOUT
(mid to late 30s): The newly employed French valet of Mr. Fogg. An honest and comic French man, who is loyal to his master and yet constantly gets into situations that hinder his master’s plans to travel around the world. Passepartout endears himself with warmth, a sense of humor and comedic flair. Must also be excellent physical comic. Must be an excellent singer and have an accomplished French accent. Actor should be no taller than 5’11”.

INSPECTOR FIX
(late 30s/mid 40s): Inspector Fix is the classic English comic version of Inspector Lestrade of the Sherlock Holmes Adventures. Egotistical and always thinks he is right. There is a major bank robbery in England around the same time Fogg leaves for his journey around the world. In the pursuit of justice Inspector Fix follows him around the world. He will stop at nothing in his pursuit, but at every turn he is thwarted by hilarious tragic mishaps. Must be superb physical comic, comfortable with slapstick and an excellent singer.

WOMEN:

AOUDA
(mid to late 20s): A beautiful South Asian princess. She is made to marry an old Rajah but when he suddenly dies, fanatical Hindus try to force her to sacrifice her life. She is rescued by Fogg and ultimately they fall in love. She must plucky, intelligent, strong, and compassionate. Must be an excellent soprano.
