BREAKDOWN

REX

35-50, male, any ethnicity, half human, half alligator; Charismatic, magnetic, unapologetically raw and commanding. We fear him and are simultaneously drawn to him. He is chained to Emerald throughout the play. Must be extremely athletic.

EMERALD

19, female, Latina, Afro-Latina, or Latina-Native American, Ty’s twin sister; An alcoholic tomboy who is literally chained to Rex throughout the play. She’s raw, tough, courageous, moments of brutality, a fighter. She grew up watching men wrestle and slaughter alligators. She’s tired of standing on the sidelines, and yearns to wrestle her own alligator. The more vulnerable she feels, the colder she becomes until her friendship with Lucy forces her to shatter her walls. Must be extremely athletic

TY

19, male, Latino, Afro-Latino or Latino-Native American, Emerald’s twin brother; Brooding, strapping, rough and raw and brutal. All he’s ever known is wrestling alligators and he has the muscles and scars to prove it. He’s gay and has been forced to hide it most of his life, because Danny, the love of his life, is in denial. He is capable of great gentleness and self-control, but responds with violence when provoked or threatened. Loves ferociously. Assumes a feminine identity, “Sasha,” during trysts with his male lover, but chafes under this disguise and yearns for a more honest relationship.

LUCY

16 (actor must be 18+), female, Black, Latina or White. A runaway and small for her age. She’s spent most of her life in and out of hospitals, alone and isolated from people. Everything she knows about the world came from books. She’s a combination of innocence, authenticity and wisdom. She’s dying of AIDS, and while she tries to hide it, we watch her physically deteriorate as the play progresses. Despite being brutalized by the world, she never loses hope, and is capable of great generosity, profound honesty and raw, genuine emotion. Must be comfortable with nudity and simulated sex.

DIANNE

19, female, White girl next door; She’s seen the world and all the ugliness in it. She grew up on the streets of Orlando. Prostitution became her means of survival. She’s been in and out of jail cells and cop cars and motel rooms. She moved to the Everglades with her mother for a fresh start. She’s trying desperately to be a kid again, trying to reinvent herself in the image purity and innocence, but is deeply haunted and tortured. She’s a pessimist desperate for the world to prove her wrong.

MERICK

19, male, Latino or White; Loves Dungeons and Dragons, and is a newly enlisted member of the Marine Reserves. Messy, socially awkward, childish and refreshingly sincere, Merick wraps himself up in fantasy games rather than engaging with the real world. He is sexually inexperienced, and yearns for the approval of his gruff, hyper-masculine and abusive father.

DANNY

19, male, Black, Latino or White; He’s the quarterback for the Florida ‘Gators. A college athlete, Danny is more educated, more talented, and slightly wealthier than his hometown peers, and takes every opportunity to flaunt these advantages. His self-esteem is tightly bound to his hyper-masculine image, and he fiercely denies every part of himself (especially his homosexuality) that might dilute or obscure this. He hunts, knows how to handle guns and is capable of violence. He is deeply and madly in love with his childhood best friend, Ty, and, while he uses stories of grotesque sexual escapades as a facade, he is deeply loyal and devoted to Ty. It is only with Sasha that he can act genuine and express his gentle vulnerability.
