Since its creation in 1957, the company has been characterized by perform works ranging from the classic to the contemporary. The ballet is currently under the leadership of Gradimir Pankov, who served as artistic director of important companies such as the National Ballet of Finland, the Cullberg Ballet and the Ballet of the Théâtre de Geneve.

Under the direction of Fernand Nault (1965-1973), Brian Macdonald (1974-1977) and Lawrence Rhodes (1990-1999), the institution has promoted the development of such notable artists as James Udelka, Édouard Lock and Ginette Laurin.

Each season, Les Grands Ballets invites internationally renowned dance groups to take part in its program. The list includes such companies as Houston Ballet, the National Ballet of Holland, the Compañía Nacional de Danza of Spain and the Warsaw Ballet, among others.

Minus One

"The illusion of beauty and a fine line that separates sanity from madness. The panic that is behind the laughter and the coexistence of fatigue and elegance." These words introduce Ohad Naharin's Minus One, one of the part of the Repertoire of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens of Montreal's most innovative.

This complex and finely chiselled work owes its quality to Alchemy with which each element is covered. Starting with fragments of seven different pieces (Zachacha, Sabotage Baby, Black Milk, Passomezzo, Anaphaza, Queens of Golub et Mabul) Mr. Naharin has succeeded in creating individual, unique and complete work that feels like an arbitrary collage under any parameter.

It is a magnificent tribute to the dance and the dancers themselves, with performers of the company speaking on 'voice over's through the piece, telling their own stories and talking about their relationships with the dance.

With a soundtrack that moves from traditional songs to popular, as well as Baroque music, ethnic rhythms and original compositions, that more than 25 dancers dance at a fascinating speed; leaping and turning, and then melt with the movements that are slow, hypnotic, which eventually end up in a full cirules of explosive expressiveness.

Minus One allows the dancers of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens of Montreal the chance to show all the diversity of their talents. This work is one of the most acclaimed worldwide company to date.

Ages: Minimum age: 7 years.
