Winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off Broadway Play, Picasso at the Lapin Agile takes place in 1904 at The Lapin Agile, a bohemian bistro, with an imagined meeting between a young Einstein and the young Picasso—both on the verge of greatness. Einstein is a year away from publishing his Theory of Relativity, and Picasso is three years away from painting “Les Demoiselles D’Avignon.” Their very witty dialogue enables both the artist and the mathematician to realize that ideas and inspiration are close allies, as they debate which one will have the greater influence on the 20th century. The play, with its rich comic banter and hilarious monologues, is about attraction, creativity and ideas that both do and do not work. It deals with fascinating and profound themes, such as celebrity versus genius versus talent, but these heavyweight ideas are lightened with the clever and humorous dialogue.
