Katharine McPhee is heading back to the small screen.

After starring in NBC's SMASH for two seasons, McPhee has landed the female lead in CBS' upcoming drama pilot SCORPION, based on the life of Walter O'Brien, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

SCORPION follows "Walter (Body of Proof's Elyes Gabel) an eccentric genius and his international network of super-geniuses who form the last line of defense against the complex threats of the modern age."

McPhee will take on the role of "Paige, a working-class hero and diner waitress who understands geniuses who becomes a nanny of sorts and translator for Walter's super team of socially misunderstood masterminds."

A runner-up from American Idol's 5th season, the singer is also currently focusing on recording new music for Columbia Records. Her self-titled debut album was released in 2007, followed by her second album, Unbroken, in 2010 and a holiday album, Christmas Is the Time to Say I Love You, released in 2012.
