According to The Hollywood Reporter, Academy Award winning writer Julian Fellowes plans to create a prequel to the highly successful series DOWNTON ABBEY. The new series would center on the early relationship between Hugh Bonneville's Earl of Grantham and Elizabeth McGovern's Countess of Grantham.

Speaking at a British Academy Film and Television Academy lecture, Fellowes revealed that the prequel would look at the couples early courtship from the moment the American heiress arrived in the U.K. The two roles will be played by younger actors, according to the BBC. There is also the possiblility that it will be set in America.

The prequel would not premiere until the finale of Downton Abbey airs. Said Fellowes, "I don't think you can continue a narrative in more than one area at once." He added that the project would focus on the pair's "blossoming relationship because McGovern's character was in love with the one played by Bonneville before they married and he married her "entirely for her money."

Downton Abbey's Maggie Smith  won an Emmy for her role in the series last Sunday evening.
