The CBS Television Network today announced that Stephen Colbert, the host, writer and executive producer of the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning "The Colbert Report," will succeed David Letterman as the host of THE LATE SHOW, effective when Mr. Letterman retires from the broadcast. In a statement released today, David Letterman commented on the news of Colbert's hiring:

"Stephen has always been a real friend to me. I'm very excited for him, and I'm flattered that CBS chose him. I also happen to know they wanted another guy with glasses."

Jimmy Fallon, who recently took over hosting duties of NBC's TONIGHT SHOW from Jay Leno, turned to Twitter to welcome Colbert to his new late show time slot, posting: "I'd like to welcome the great @StephenAtHome to network late night and also congratulate him on his new name: Jimmy Colbert."
