Deadline writes that producer Steven Spielberg is eyeing Baz Luhrmann to direct Stanley Kubrick's unproduced Napoleon screenplay as a miniseries for HBO.

The miniseries isn't the only Napoleon-centered project in development. Warner Bros. recently announced its own Napoleon biopic, directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman).

But HBO's series would offer a longer, more in-depth study of Napoleon's complex character.

Napoleon Bonaparte was Emperor of France from 1804 to 1815. Considered one of the greatest military leaders in history, Napoleon's participation in the Napoleonic Wars won him control over most of continental Europe. But the Grande Armee's invasion of Russia in 1812 was Napoleon's eventual undoing. The campaign left the army battered, and in 1814, the Coalition forced Napoleon into exile in Elba. He escaped and returned to power that same year but was defeated in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

Luhrmann most recently helmed The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. His past credits include Australia, Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet and Strictly Ballroom.
