"I'm sorry. Is everyone in this room somehow related?"

Imagine waiting for an elevator and when the doors open you're face to face with your sister, who doesn't know she's your sister, and your father who knows he's your father even though you don't and knows she's your sister even though she doesn't. Awk-ward...

That stuff never happens in real life, but this is GREY'S ANATOMY where a moment like is just another day at work. And in the second episode of Season 11, "Puzzle with a Missing Piece", Dr. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) is in the midst of a very bad day at work.

Poor Maggie. First has to fill Yang's shoes as the head of cardio, then ends up not liking the sister she came to meet, (she calls Mer a rock, as in I picked up the rock and didn't like what was under it so I put the rock back!) has some sort of mental block remembering Jo Wilson's name, and then, barely 15 minutes into this episode, she gets Alex (Justin Chambers) fired. And then a giant singing sturgeon appears in the lobby and sings a congrats message to Maggie. Yes. A giant, singing sturgeon. Yeah, it was that kind of day.

So far this season of GREY'S ANATOMY is the season of awkward family moments, mainly because the family members involved have no idea they're family. Take the scene where little Zola runs up to Maggie in the cafeteria. Maggie discovers Zola is Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek's (Patrick Dempsey) daughter. In quick succession she meets Derek, then Derek's sister, Amelia, which is when she says, "I'm sorry. Is everyone in this room related?" And she says this to Richard (James Pickens, Jr.), who knows he's Maggie's father even though she doesn't. Yeah, Maggie, at this moment everyone in this room is kind of related. And they're all related in one way or another to you.

Maggie has a chip on her shoulder, and after last episode she did not come off as the warm and fuzzy type. In this episode, she's often cold and unforgiving, but as time ticks by, you can't help but feel for her. She begins learning more about her sister too---Amelia tells her how even though she has a few sisters, she thinks of Meredith as her sister too, describing Mer as hard to get to know but worth it, which is probably the best description of Meredith Grey ever. And when she meets Zola she makes the connection that Ellis gave up a daughter for adoption and Meredith adopted a daughter. Maggie starts to reassess her decision about Mer being a rock, and figures she'd better pick up that rock and take another look under it.

When Mer vehemently disagrees with Maggie over a patient's care, she gives Maggie that, "It's on, bitch, it's on" face, but later, after she gets more details, Mer covers for Maggie. This warms Maggie a lot, and out of nowhere she takes the plunge...

And at 8:58 she drops the bombshell on Mer. To say Mer is not receptive is an understatement. Personally, I didn't think we'd see that moment until Sweeps.

And so ends the worst day of Dr. Maggie Pierce's life. Until, of course, she finds out about Richard. Maybe they're saving that for Sweeps.

Sitings
Maggie's patient who didn't want to live anymore was played by Eileen Ryan, Sean Penn's mom.

Memorable Moments
Maggie to Richard, referring to Ellis Grey: "How well did you know her?" How well? How well indeed, Maggie. How well indeed.

Maggie, who tells Jo to bring the thunder, is outside, in the rain, talking to her parents on her cell and there's a clap of thunder. Maggie says, "It was..." then pauses. A dark and stormy night, perhaps?

A guy in the emergency room, who brings in his gym hook-up after she gets all wonky after sex, and finds out she had a stroke, wonders if his sexual prowess had something to do with her condition: Guy: "Was it just me? April: "What answer are you hoping for?"

Derek's sister Amelia's sheer joy, after Maggie approaches her and asks if it was she who paged Maggie for a consult or if it was the "other" Dr. Shepherd.

Final Thoughts
Will Mer warm to Maggie? Will anyone ever refer to Derek as "the other Dr. Shepherd" again? And is sex that sends one of the parties to the hospital really what we should be shooting for?
