BWW Book Review: THE WALKING DEAD Hard-Cover Journals On Shelves Now!

It's always a long, hot summer as we anxiously await for THE WALKING DEAD to return. Insight Deluxe Journals has provided some inspiration for that Fan Fiction you've been dying to write.

Just in case you forgot (and if you did, shame on you), AMC's THE WALKING DEAD premiered in October of 2010. Based on the Robert Kirkman comic series, we are taken on a journey of Rick Grimes who wakes up in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. What comes to pass throughout the series is the human beings actually turning into monsters that Rick and his group of survivors need to be afraid of. In the last season, the tables turned on us and we learned that maybe it's actually Rick and his group that have become the villains. It is a fascinating tale of the human spirit and what it takes to survive.

Insight Journals have released THE WALKING DEAD Hardcover Rule Journals ($18.95) in four different versions. You can choose covers featuring Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, Michonne and/or the Walkers who pose as the stories villains.

Rick Grimes, a police officer before the apocalypse is now struggling as a single Dad and self-imposed leader of a group of survivors. Rick's inner demons surface frequently as he is forced to battle actual demons to stay alive. He is another in a series of classic AMC anti-heroes that is relatable, sympathetic and sometimes fearful.

Michonne, a character that entered the series later is a vigilante that happens upon the group as she is dragging her "pet" zombies through the woods. Bits and pieces of Michonne are leaked out through the series, but we, the audience, still aren't quite sure as to her motivation. She has proved to be a reliable soldier and companion to Rick. There are even Michonne/Rick shippers out there, although I am not one of them. I do quite enjoy her relationship with Rick's son, Carl, as we learn that she had lost a child in the past, her motherly tendencies do tend to creep out to aid Carl's struggle through not only the new world, but adolescence.

The walkers themselves are works of makeup and costuming genius. As discussed on TALKING DEAD, the actors who portray the walkers actually go through a zombie workshop with choreographers and the directors to make sure that they are all moving the same, eating (ew) the same and look similar in their herds. It is this attention to detail that makes them not only fascinating, but truly horrifying.

And finally, there is Daryl Dixon. What can we say about Daryl? He is a soldier, first and foremost and will stop at nothing to be a protector. So actor/model Norman Reedus' portrayal of this bad boy with a heart of gold has pretty much captured the nation at this point. Naturally, when given the option, I selected this journal as it is his face I want to stare at when I take to journaling. Daryl has been at Rick's side, no questions asked, from the beginning and he is a hunter. We have seen glimpses of his heart from his deep friendship (?) with Carol to his mentoring (?) to sweet Beth. When Daryl's heart breaks? Everyone's heart breaks.

All four versions of the journal are on shelves now at $18.95 MSRP. It is just a little something to get us through until the October premiere. Let the countdown begin...
