Deadline writes that Kate Hudson, her father Kurt Russell, and John Malkovich have signed on for the upcoming BP oil spill film DEEPWATER HORIZON.

DEEPWATER HORIZON chronicles "the infamous 2010 BP oil-rig explosion in the Gulf Of Mexico that killed 11 people and gushing oil into the water for 87 days." Mark Wahlberg stars in the film as an electrician stationed on the oil rig, and Hudson will play his wife.

Matthew Michael Carnahan penned the film's script, which Peter Berg will direct.

Based on the New York Times article by David Barstow, David Rohde and Stephanie Saul, DEEPWATER HORIZON follows Wahlberg and "Andrea Fleytas [Gina Rodriguez], the 23-year-old who was monitoring the oil rig's safety systems in the moments before the explosion. She testified later that she did not immediately sound an alarm because she had not been training to deal with multiple warnings."

Also in talks to join the cast is TEEN WOLF's Dylan O'Brien, who would take on the role of "Caleb Holloway, the youngest crew member who survives, but who is devastated to have lost a majority of his crew."

DEEPWATER HORIZON will hit theaters on Sept. 30, 2016.

Hudson will soon appear on the big screen in ROCK THE KASBAH. Among her recent film credits are GOOD PEOPLE and WISH I WAS HERE, as well as the TV series GLEE and more. Russell's upcoming projects include BONE TOMAHAWK and Quentin Tarantino's THE HATEFUL EIGHT. He recently starred in FURIOUS SEVEN. Malkovich's upcoming films include UNLOCKED and DOMINION. He recently appeared in the TV series CROSSBONES.
