Antoine Fuqua to Direct Boxing Drama SOUTHPAW with Jake Gyllenhaal

According to Deadline, TRAINING DAY's Antoine Fuqua has just signed on to helm The Weinstein Company's upcoming boxing drama SOUTHPAW, with Jake Gyllenhaal set to star.

Written by SONS OF ANARCHY's Kurt Sutter, the film follows "a welterweight champion who rises in his profession while his personal life falls apart." The film has yet to cast its second lead according to the report, that of "Titus 'Tick' Willis, a former fighter who was forced to retire after losing an eye and was on his way to becoming a pro trainer but retreated after his son was killed."

SOUTHPAW is set to begin filming this summer.

Fuqua's other credits include OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN and the upcoming documentary SUGE KNIGHT.

Gyllenhaal's upcoming projects include Everest and Nightcrawler. Among his recent film credits are Enemy, Prisoners, End of Watch, Source Code, Love & Other Drugs and more.
