February 26, 2016 - Chattanooga, TN - The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera is participating in the National "Read Across America" Day at area schools from March 1 through March 4. The official "Read Across America" Day is Wednesday, March 2, but the CSO will be celebrating with schools all week long. The National Endowment for the Arts' "Read Across America" is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss.

24 schools have taken advantage of the CSO's offering of reading a music-related book to their students, and the CSO selected The Remarkable Farkle McBride written by John Lithgow. Each school will then be gifted with a free copy of the book for their classrooms. Schools include Apison Elementary, Ringgold Primary, Red Bank Elementary, Brainerd Baptist School, Barger Academy, Calvin Donaldson, East Lake Elementary, and more. Volunteer readers include CSO Board members, staff, musicians, and regular CSO volunteers. Area elementary schools not participating in the reading will still receive a free copy of the book. More than 100 books in total will be donated by the CSO.

"The CSO has been increasing its work in schools over the last several years through our Ensembles in the Schools program," stated Interim Executive Director, Samantha Teter. "We thought it would be fitting to branch out beyond just performance and bring music-related books into schools as well. We think this is a great start to expanding our reach with area students."
