Canton Symphony Orchestra Presents Verdi's Requiem Mass, 4/29

For our season finale, the Canton Symphony Orchestra pulls out all the stops for the massive Requiem Mass by Giuseppe Verdi. This powerful concert full of splendor begins at 8:00pm on April 29, 2017at Umstattd Performing Arts Hall at the Zimmermann Symphony Center. This concert is underwritten by the generosity of T.K. & Faye A. Heston.

Verdi's Requiem Mass is a large orchestral and choral work originally started as a collaboration of many Italian composers to commemorate the death of one of the great Italian composers Gioachino Rossini. Many complications arose during the collaboration of composers, and the Requiem (in the form we see it today) never reached completion. Verdi continued to edit his composition in the following years, keeping his parts of the work to himself. In 1873, the great Italian and writer and humanist Alessandro Manzoni passed away. Manzoni had always been an inspiration for Verdi, and his passing provided the push Verdi needed to finish his Requiem. Premiered one year later on the anniversary of Manzoni's passing; Verdi's Requiem Mass has become a standard in the orchestral repertoire.

This concert has no shortage of special guests joining the Canton Symphony Orchestra. The CSO is joined by soloists Karen Foster, soprano, Kathryn Findlen, mezzo soprano, Tim Culver, tenor, and Nathan Stark, bass. Also joining the orchestra is the Canton Symphony Chorus, the Malone University Chorale and First United Methodist Church's Schola Cantorum. Dr. Rachel Waddell, Associate Conductor of the CSO, is hosting a special round table with the soloists during the pre-concert lecture time at 7pm in Umstattd Hall.
