As a retired teacher and mother of five, author Virginia Loffelmacher influenced the lives of countless children. As she looked back on her life and career, she felt a strong desire to give her teachers and parents credit for the love and hard work they had given her over the years. In her new memoir, "The Fall of the White Knight" (published by Trafford Publishing), Loffelmacher pays homage to the hardships and triumphs that her family and friends endured as the United States plunged into the Great Depression.

"The Fall of the White Knight" recounts Loffelmacher's experiences growing up in the badlands of North Dakota. As a child, her life revolved around her father, the white knight, who struggled to make ends meet for his family. "We were not able to get good jobs," Loffelmacher recalls. "My dad was skilled at many things, but often worked for a dollar a day."

Through the efforts of her loving parents and teachers, Loffelmacher grew up to be a strong, independent woman. She learned that even as her white knight fell, he had the courage and strength to get back up, which has made all the difference.

She encourages readers "to realize that problems are part of life and people need to feel cared about and encouraged."
