ATLANTA

In the tradition of African griots - storytellers - author Sundiata, the Tale Weaver, presents an updated rendition of a moving, dramatic folktale about a little girl who is kidnapped by an evil Gimli in his new book, "The Tale of Mkeke" (published by AuthorHouse).

Mkeke is having fun at the ocean, but when her sisters tell her it's time to leave, she dawdles behind and the evil Gimli traps her in his drum. He makes her sing and tricks people into giving him money and food by convincing them that he has a magical singing drum. When Mkeke's father finds out where she is, he goes to rescue her, but will he be able to outwit the evil Gimli?

A new take on an old African tale, modernized with an uniquely hip-hop culture flair, "The Tale of Mkeke" is an educational tale for children, encouraging them to avoid the pitfalls of "stranger danger." Sundiata hopes to increase readers' awareness of scams and child abduction and open the door to healthy and pertinent dialogue about an extremely uncomfortable topic.

"This book is relevant because of the reality of human trafficking and kidnapping in many places around the world," Sundiata says. "'The Tale of Mkeke' speaks to these things directly with a soft hand that children can understand without experiencing the horror of a real event."
