Thanks to Hollywood stereotypes, organized crime almost always brings to mind the gritty and almost glamorous exploits of Italian crime families. Organized crime, however, is much more complex and devastating than the ones pictured on television on the silver screen. Their illicit activities affect different aspects of society and even entire industries. In the new book, "The Loser," first-time author Oren Hall shares a rare and astonishing glimpse into a world that is closed to most people - the world of organized crime - and the life he lived in its underbelly.

In 1967, Hall crossed paths with one of the biggest teamster bosses in the world. Before long, he started working for him and when he ended up in prison, Hall, too, found himself in jail in the same year. Since then, the author has been in and out of the prison system for 35 years and was wrongly convicted three times. In this startling account, he narrates his side of the story, painting a disturbing portrait of the criminal underworld and its inevitable perils. Along the way, he exposes some curious gaps in the justice system.

With his personal story as case study, Hall lets readers examine the past and present state of U.S. law enforcement, the government and the way these two deal with felonies. Startling and informative, "The Loser" is a cautionary tale of the risks of living in the fringes of society and it is a true story of crime, punishment and the not always simple relationship of these two.
