Each of Byers' books has its own page set that includes a look inside, the story line, reviews, story origin and a link to purchase the book. The genre of Byers' novels would fall into that of family history.

Among the most popular is Goad of Honor about an illegitimate German who builds a distillery in 1850 east of St Louis, Missouri, adopts the illegitimate son of a French voyager, succeeding generations increasing in wealth and status until 1937 when they live in a large mansion filled with art treasures gained through the illegal production of whiskey during prohibition, nonetheless believing themselves to be descendants of German aristocracy.

In 1999 he published The Naked Jaybird, a plot to destroy America, and Bent Coin, a tale of love and delusion. Lost River Bridge, an Ozark Mountain tale garnered great reviews in 2001, His fifth novel came in 2009 at the request of his daughter, a delightful western called A Boy and His Horse; The Autobiography of Kade Zachary.

While all this was in process, Stephen toured the four-state area (KS - MO - OK -AR) delivering free four-hour seminars on creative writing at public libraries and offering five-week Free School Seminars at the Jones Center in Springdale. In 2013, he published his teachings in a book titled Beginning Creative Writing: A Personal Learning Experience. An author in Mountain Home , AR wrote, "The best lecture on creative writing I ever heard."
