SARATOGA, Calif. - "Burma Headhunters" (published by Xlibris) is a new book by Harold Mason Young which describes the Wa people of Burma and their way of life in ancient times. The author's unique perspective on the Wa is drawn from his direct contact of the tribe as well as from the Lahu people.

Young considered the Wa people unmatched warriors, distinct from any other ethnic group living in the region. In "Burma Headhunters," he carefully details the people, their history as passed down through oral tradition from generation to generation, their customs, beliefs and rituals, and the dreaded practice of headhunting.

The book offers a unique perspective by an American who was born and raised in the region. Because of the fearsome reputation of the tribe, few foreigners engaged with the Wa or attempted to carry the Gospel message to them as the author and his missionary father did for many years. Young's typical quaint and candid writing style makes the reading experience both entertaining and educational.

While not intended as a formal work on the cultural anthropology of the Wa people, "Burma Headhunters" offers considerable and rare information for the modern student of disappearing cultures and for anyone with a keen interest in the elusive Wa tribal people.
