Author Helen Lawson-Goins Releases SURPRISE IN THE GARDEN

How can children learn to understand how Mother Nature is involved in the process of life? Author Helen Lawson-Goins helps parents teach their children how in a fun way through her delightful picture book, Surprise in the Garden.

Josh and his mother, Daisy, live in the city, far from The Farm where her sister, Lucy, lives. Daisy wants Josh to have the same values that she and Lucy have. Josh remembers the birth of a calf from his first visit to Aunt Lucy and Uncle Troy's farm, and can hardly wait to visit there again. Uncle Troy takes Josh to see The Farm animals and struggles to answer Josh's many questions. Aunt Lucy takes Josh to her vegetable garden where Josh is in for more learning about Mother Nature. There, Josh learns a valuable lesson when he discovers a surprise in the garden.

Filled with vibrant illustrations by Dee Reston, Surprise in the Garden is an engaging tale that will regale young readers from the first page until the very last. Helen Lawson-Goins was raised in a coal mining camp along with five siblings. It was hard for her parents to feed six children and themselves. The family depended on hunting and gathering of food and tending a garden to have enough food for the winter months, as did other families in the coal camp community. The author has always loved to learn as much as she could and went to college after she was married and had two sons. She continued with her studies until she received a Ph.D. degree. She worked in the mental health and substance abuse fields, which she found to be very rewarding. She retired after 18 years of service. Lawson-Goins, however, did not care for retirement and had to find ways to keep herself busy. She tended her own garden and made quilts and dolls. She and her two sisters formed a company and have a patent pending for the dolls, which they call "Coal Camp Kids." After a while, she started writing and completed her first children's book, based on her memories from childhood at her Aunt Lucy and Uncle Troy's farm. The author later returned to work and published her first book. She is currently at work on another book, which she hopes to publish very soon.
