Cashai Pier Paid has been a hood wife for 14 years in two different marriages. Slipping into the pages of her memoir, readers will learn that there have been three men in Paid's life over a 25-year period. She is either known to be one's baby mother, ex-wife, or wife in the streets.

In "A Real Hood Wife," she will be talking about what's happening now; she will take readers all the way back through the beginning of her experiences in the streets just trying to survive, without getting killed or going to jail. She has spent a long period of time just trying to defend herself and in learning that there are rules on the streets. An extraordinary reminiscence that readers do not happen upon every day, it is an eye-opening tour into the modern urban American gangster life.

It is a different life from the life most people know, built upon many inversions, running on the rules of rebellion, or an underground movement, but in her unique context, Paid shows the universal relationships and the more tender emotions trying their best to survive, just as the hood's wife and her family does. She puts it bluntly but honestly:

"This book, my memoir, is about the strengths and struggles in my life as a 'hood wife.' A real, honest-to-goodness hood wife is a mother first, a housekeeper, and a hustler. I think of myself as a husband and wife because in the life of a hood wife, I have had to play both parts in order to survive the streets."

About the Author
Growing up, one of Cashai Pier Paid's guardians said that when she was born, the doctor shaved her hair off and stuck needles in her head in order for her to live. She is probably the only human being alive with a two-page birth certificate. She was born to a teenage mom in the 1970s (who, at the time she got pregnant with the author, already had a 3-month-old baby). Paid started her street life at the age of 14 because of her guardian's drug abuse and her having to be a mother to feed her younger siblings.
