THE SING OFF, NBC's smash a capella singing competition returns tonight! The show is a one night only holiday special with an instant winner at the end of the night. I couldn't be more excited! This has always been my favorite and, in my opinion, most unique of the singing competition shows. This holiday special brings audiences six brand-new a capella groups ready to become the next SING OFF champions.

I won't lie, I am a little upset that Ben Folds isn't going to be a part of the show, but I have total faith in Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump. And, of course, I'm excited to see Shawn Stockman and Jewel return to the judges' chairs. It will also be fun seeing Nick Lachey crack adorably corny jokes as host again too.

The six new groups this season are the Melodores, SanFran6, Timothy's Gift, a.squared, The Exchange and Traces. The a capella groups came together for an energetic opening number of "Kids in America." When host Nick Lachey took the stage, he poked fun at newcomer Patrick Stump and I couldn't help but hope that one day the two of them will have their own talk show.

The six contestants will battle it out in the Signature Song round, where each group will perform a song they feel sums up their sound. Three groups will move on to the next round-Judges' Choice, where the remaining groups will perform a song chosen by the juges. Throw in a hoilday performance from a capella superstars Pentatonix and this past season's winners Home Free with the judges and by the end of the night THE SING OFF will have a brand new champion! Here we go...:

SIGNATURE SONG

Group: Timothy's Gift
Song: "Ghost"
My opinion: This group blew my expectations of them out of the water. Great start to the competition!

Group: a.squared
Song: "Pompeii"
My opinion: It was a good performance, but I felt like the use of technology kind of overpowered the vocals.

Group: Traces
Song: "River Deep, Mountain High"
My opinion: That is a BIG song, and although Traces did it well, I wish there was a bit more to it.

Group: The Exchange
Song: "Love Runs Out"
My opinion: YES. That was fantastic! And can we talk about that last riff please? I liked seeing these guys back on this stage.

Group: SanFran6
Song: "Break Free"
My opinion: I didn't really care for this performance but their beatboxer is INSANELY great.

Group: Melodores
Song: "Trumpets"
My opinion: I felt like the performance was just a bunch of fun to watch and listen to.

After round one, Season 3 champions Pentatonix came out and blew the roof off with a wickedly cook Christmas medley of "Hark! The Herald Angels", "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" and their original "That's Christmas to Me." Then the hard part happened and three contestants were eliminated. Entering round two are The Exchange, Traces, and the Melodores.

JUDGES' CHOICE

Group: Traces
Song: "I'm Every Woman"
My opinion: THAT is the power I was looking for! They BROUGHT it! Fantastic.

Group: The Exchange
Song: "Sing"
My opinion: Ridiculous! Absolutely incredible arrangement. I'm so glad they were given this song because it was a challenge that they totally mastered. Plus that three part harmony was incredibly clever and ended up being my favorite part of the song.

Group: The Melodores
Song: "Take Me to Church"
My opinion: This was a moving performance. And that voice had so much power...well done.

While waiting for the final results, we were treated to a beautiful rendition of Ben E. King's classic "Stand By Me" performed by this past season's winners Home Free and the judges Patrick Stump, Shawn Stockman and Jewel. Seeing them all on the same stage was wonderful. After that, the winner was announced...

THE MELODORES!!!

The Melodores made THE SING OFF history by becoming the first collegiate group to win. Congratulations to them and the other 5 groups who competed!
