Gabriel Kahane

Friday, May 1 at 8:00 PM

"[Kahane] is well on his way to developing an original creative personality; his music absorbs everything from nineteen-twenties neoclassicism to blue-grass and modern indie pop, with potent melodies bridging the disparate styles." - Alex Ross, The New Yorker

Singer, pianist, and composer Gabriel Kahane has formed musical alliances across diverse musical spheres, attracting the attention of fans and critics alike. His acclaimed debut album was released in the Fall of 2008 on Family Records, featuring guest appearances by Chris Thile, Sam Amidon, and Sufjan Stevens. Equally at home in the worlds of indie rock and classical music, 2009 witnessed the premiere of his song cycle For the Union Dead on poems by Robert Lowell. A work for solo piano, Django: Tiny Variations on a Big Dog, receives its premiere at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall in April on a recital by Kahane's father, the pianist Jeffrey Kahane. Gabriel has appeared in recital with Grammy-winning bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff throughout Europe, and recently appeared with Rufus Wainwright on Elvis Costello's: Spectacle on the Sundance Channel. Composer of the cult found-text song cycle Craigslistlieder, Kahane is also at work on a musical, February House, commissioned by the Public Theater, where he is the recipient of the first Musical Theater Initiative Fellowship. $12 in advance, $15 at the door

AN EVENING WITH JACK TERRICLOTH: THE MIDNIGHT FORMALS
Fridays May 1, 8, 15 and 22 at Midnight

A sure bet for those seeking a dash of midnight mayhem, the infamously conspiratorial Jack Terricloth, frontman of The World/Inferno Friendship Society and author of "The Collected Cloth," brings an NYC premiere of his intimate evening of punk-noir and song featuring multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Sandra Malak to the Pub for four rounds only. A tear through tales and tunes of the then and now, and unknown gems to boot, these rare evenings provide a one-time glimpse into what dwells in the mind of this beloved anarchist. Pick a midnight, any midnight, and dress appropriately, damn-it. $15 advance/$18 at the door

UPRIGHT CABARET TAKES MANHATTAN
May 1 at 10:00 PM, May 2 & 4 at 9:30 PM

After their sold out SRO debut at Joe's Pub in January 2009, L.A.'s famed Upright Cabaret brings their brand of "new generation cabaret" back to New York City for a weekend of star-studded concerts directed by Upright's new Artistic Director Broadway/Recording star Billy Porter at Joe's Pub, 425 Lafayette Street, New York, NY 10003.

Upright Cabaret is a wildly popular Los Angeles night of song featuring an eclectic mix of artists from stage, record and screen. Cabaret is synonymous with New York City, but in sunny southern California Producer/Hosts Chris Isaacson and Shane Scheel along with Music Director Chris Bratten have turned cabaret into a hip and contemporary social swirl of young Broadway and Hollywood.

In the Golden Age of entertainment, Hollywood supper clubs like the Coconut Grove hosted all of the great stars of the day and helped define an era of style and sophistication that Hollywood was famous for. This was also a time when Hollywood stars could sing, act, dance and most importantly...entertain. Upright Cabaret has successfully reclaimed that era against a modern day backdrop of paparazzi, glitz and glamour in one of the hottest neighborhoods in the City of Angels. Now, the producers intend to bring a concert version of their "new generation cabaret" on a quarterly basis to Joe's Pub in New York City. $25
