EDINBURGH 2010: BWW Reviews: A BRIEF HISTORY OF SCOTLAND - WE DONE LOADS!
I'll admit that it was the title which drew me in to see a show which otherwise might not have been at the top of my list. The same self-deprecating humour runs through the show and makes it an enjoyable 50 minutes.
From the garden of Eden-burgh right up to present day, the show is structured well and written in a way that balances actual history with comical variations on the truth - a balance which is not always achieved in shows of this kind. A lot of the more modern-day jokes would only be funny if you were Scottish or quite familiar with the various regional stereotypes, but then if you go to a show about Scotland you'd be silly not to expect that.
The cast were engaging, funny, and clearly having a great time. The show doesn't take itself too seriously and neither do they. Their comic timing was spot-on and in general they gave good performances. There's even the odd bit of cross-dressing.
If you're a fan of humorous takes on Scottish history (or if you just like to poke fun at them), this show is for you.
