Review: WHITE CHRISTMAS, Liverpool Empire Theatre While last week's snow may have melted away, there will still be a White Christmas in Liverpool thanks to the touring production of Irving Berlin's beloved Holiday classic.

Based on the 1954 film of the same name, White Christmas: The Musical follows veterans turned performers Bob Wallace (Jay McGuiness) and Phil Davis (Dan Burton) as they head to the suddenly not-so-snow-covered mountains of Vermont with their recent acquaintances, a pair of singing sisters in tow. The sisters, Betty & Judy (Jessica Daley and (Monique Young), had been hired to perform at an inn over the holidays, only to find their contract cancelled since the inn is struggling to stay afloat.

When Bob and Phil realize that the run-down inn is owned by their former Sargent (Michael Starke), they strive to move their upcoming revue to the inn. What follows is an all-singing, all-dancing production packed with impressive choreography, vocals and plenty of romance. As such, it's the perfect festive treat for theatregoers and fans of the original movie.

When older shows are brought to modern stages, there always runs a risk of the content feeling dated. However, this production, directed by Ian Talbot, succeeds by transporting audiences back to the 1950s. This journey back in time is further elevated through stunning costume design by Diego Pitarch.

Throughout, the leading performers give strong performances. McGuiness is effortlessly suave and charming as Bob Wallace, delivering strong vocals throughout, particualrly during the titular number "White Christmas". He is paired nicely with the charismatic Burton as Phil, whose incredibly masterful dancing seems to be taken straight out of a golden-age musical film.

Monique Young captures the energy of younger sisters everywhere in her portrayal of Judy while also joining Burton in one of the production's more impressive tap numbers in act two. Jessica Daley gives an undoubtedly stand-out performance as Betty, meaning it's hard for audiences to take their eyes off her throughout. Micheal Stark also steps up to the plate as General Waverly, delivering a considered, thoughtful performance. However, from the entire ensemble, there is never a note (or tap) out of place.

White Christmas is the perfect production for this time of year, not only due to its apt title. It's funny, romantic, and heart-warming - the kind of show that will make your spirits soar. (And it may even include a little snowfall).

White Christmas is at Liverpool Empire Theatre until 31 December 2022.
