Her Majesty Queen Noor & Lord Malloch-Brown Raise Awareness for Pakistan Flood

By:

Refugees International (RI) announced today that Her Majesty Queen Noor, RI board member, and Lord Mark Malloch Brown will host Pakistan: Hopes Submerged, Resilience Remains, on November 15 in New York City at 6:30pm. Screen Actors Guild Award® Winner and Academy Award® Nominee Matt Dillon, a board member of RI, will also be in attendance. The cocktail reception will raise awareness on the on-going crises in Pakistan and highlight how the devastating floods that started in August were linked to climate change. An estimated 20 million Pakistanis have been affected - more than the Asian Tsunami, the 2005 earthquake in Kashmir, and the 2010 Haiti earthquake combined.

Michel Gabaudan, Refugees International President, stated today, "We are very grateful that Her Majesty Queen Noor and Lord Malloch-Brown could be here to support us. The international community must address the fact that millions of people are being uprooted by climate-related events. Climate change is happening now, and in disasters that range from Hurricane Katrina to the floods in Pakistan, it is beginning to affect us all."

"In a country wrought with poverty and conflict, the people of Pakistan have now endured horrendous floods and will soon be facing a drought and a food crisis. The humanitarian community needs to be prepared to respond more rapidly to these large-scale disasters," said Her Majesty, Queen Noor. "The work that Refugees International does is vital in spurring the world to prevent and respond more effectively to these crises."

The evening will feature a discussion with Her Majesty Queen Noor, Lord Malloch-Brown, Mr. Gabaudan, and Refugees International's Climate Displacement Program Manager, Alice Thomas, who recently completed a mission to Pakistan. Ms. Thomas witnessed first-hand the challenges faced by the international community in responding to flood victims and will highlight the necessity of establishing a plan that helps agencies prepare for large-scale natural disasters.

The event will be held at the Bohemian Benevolent and Literary Association, 321 East 73rd Street, 3rd Floor in New York on November 15, at 6:30pm. Press wishing to cover the event should contact Sara Davis, The T.A.S.C. Group, at 646-723-4344 or via e-mail at Sara@thetascgroup.com.
