Julie Andrews, who starred as Maria Rainer in the wildly successful film version seen by generations of children all around the world, recently appeared at Strathmore to celebrate the anniversary. The original 1959 Broadway show won four Tony Awards including best actress for Mary Martin and ran for 1443 performances.
