Green Mountain Opera Company Brings ORLANDO To THT 6/13

By:

Vermont is blessed with two fine opera companies: the Opera Company of Middlebury, and the Green Mountain Opera Festival, which performs at the Barre Opera House. This month, for the first time, both companies will perform in Middlebury.

OCM is currently presenting Bizet's The Pearl Fishers at Town Hall Theater. When it closes, GMOF will move in with a production of Handel's Orlando, on Sunday, June 13, at 8 pm.

"They're a terrific company with a very strong Emerging Artists program," says OCM artistic director Douglas Anderson. "It culminates every year in a production just for these great young singers, although they've never been able to do it in a proper theater. This year we invited them to come to Middlebury and present the work at Town Hall Theater."

Orlando will be directed by famed baritone Sanford Sylvan.

Handel's "opera serie" was first performed in 1733 - and wasn't heard again until a performance in 1959. It tells the story of Orlando, a soldier in Charlemagne's army, who falls in love with a pagan princess - who, this being opera, is in love with another man.

"I think the fact that GMOF wants to come here is a tribute to our theater, and more importantly, to our audience. We do the Met Opera broadcasts here and have a very loyal opera following. Middlebury is becoming the opera capital of the region."

Tickets are $22, and can be purchased at www.townhaltheater.org, 802 382-9222, at the THT Box Office (Mon-Sat, Noon-5) or at the door.
