Triple Jump Productions Present Two Plays by Doug Lucie: BLIND and DOING THE BUSINESS, Beginning Today
Triple Jump Productions presents two plays by acclaimed author Doug Lucie on the intersection of art and money: the stage premiere of Blind and the first revival of short play Doing the Business, unseen since its Royal Court debut in 1990. Blind will be the first London premiere of major British playwright Doug Lucie's work in over ten years.
Blind features Daniel York (star of World of Extreme Happiness at the National Theatre) as Svengali-like art collector Paul Stone in a bleak and sometimes scathing study of the British contemporary art world. A wealthy, taste-making gallerist turns his hard-drinking enfant terrible prote?ge? into a household name. As she publicly self-combusts though, he coldly transfers his attention to an aspiring artist - one with a mysterious patron of his own. Channelling Saatchi and Emin for his characters, here Lucie proves he is (as ever) funny, articulate and on the pulse
Doing the Business suggests that the gift of sponsorship comes at a price. It imagines a meeting between two old Cambridge pals, one now an Artistic director of a theatre with a deficit to cover, the other a sponsorship manager for a large corporation. Written in response to the slashing of 1980s arts subsidy, Doing the Business feels as relevant in 2014 as it did then. When the names of businesses routinely adorn theatre programmes (and the theatres themselves) it's worth asking - at what cost?
As austerity bites once more, and artists are ever more reliant on benefactors, the question remains: what is the difference between sponsorship... and ownership?
