Theatre503's SLAVES Plays Final Performance on 2/20

By:

Theatre503's SLAVES: A new play by Rex Obano, will play its final performance on February 20, 2010.

Slaves is an unflinching portrait of prison life on both sides of the bars. Rex started writing Slaves while working in HMP Wandsworth: "Whenever we ask why people commit a crime or why they are willing to kill or die for a cause, the answer is invariably fear. I was afraid every day I spent working in prison; of inmates, officers and myself. We are united by fear and it is this fear that makes slaves of us all."

503Five: Rex is an inaugural member of the 503Five, a group of, hitherto, unproduced playwrights, selected from two hundred of the country's most exciting new voices. As recipients of Theatre503's first ever commissioning awards, they will be resident with the company for a year in a unique programme that gives playwrights both artistic opportunities and enables them to be part of the decision-making process of Theatre503.

Rex Obano is currently doing his Masters in Screenwriting at Royal Holloway. Slaves is his first full-length play. Rex was part of The Script Factory Writers Group, Talawa Theatre's Writers Group, BBC Writers Room Film Residency, Writer in Residence on Tiata Delights ... And Explores for Almeida Theatre, Royal Court Invitation Writers Group, he is also a member of the Bloomberg Tricycle Playwrights group.

Nadia Latif trained as a director at RADA, under William Gaskill. She has been Artistic Director of Tabula Rasa Theatre, specialising in new and international writing, since 2003.
