Theatre Uncut Announce New Power Plays Plus Downloads

By:

The multi award-winning political agitators, Theatre Uncut, are back with THE POWER PLAYS a new series of brand-new of short plays written by some of the UK's most dynamic female playwrights exploring the theme of power from the female perspective. Responding to current gender politics, including the #timesup and #metoo movements, the confirmed writers are diverse and wide-ranging in their backgrounds and professional experience.

The writers are: Vivienne Franzmann, a British playwright, whose first play Mogadishu was critically acclaimed; Sabrina Mahfouz a British Egyptian poet, playwright, performer; Atiha Sen Gupta, an award-winning playwright and scriptwriter for Skins (all three having written for Theatre Uncut previously); Cordelia Lynn, whose new play One For Sorrow has been programmed for The Royal Court this year and is under commission from Headlong and The Yard; Sharon Clark, one of this year's Bruntwood winners; Suhaiymah Manzoor Khan, a writer, speaker and poet who tackles race, gender Islamophobia and intersectionality and; Niellah Arboine who writes extensively for Gal Dem.

The Power Plays are available to download from theatreuncut.com from today, 1 May 2018, and can be performed by anyone anywhere free of charge for a limited period. Over 6,000 people have performed Theatre Uncut plays across 26 countries so far. Visit the Theatre Uncut Mass Participation Map to see how far these plays have reached so far and to upload information on your own Theatre Uncut event.

"As the world rocks with the fierce debate around gender equality we wanted set our writers the challenge to explore the theme of power from the female perspective. We are delighted to be working with a collection of the UK's most dynamic playwrights, some who have written for Theatre Uncut before and some for the first time. We can't wait to see how people use the plays to take part in the global debate, joining with Theatre Uncut at this immensely exciting moment in history".

Hannah Price and Emma Callander - Co-Artistic Directors of Theatre Uncut

On Sunday 6 May at 2pm Theatre Uncut will be presenting an afternoon of performance and discussion at Bristol Old Vic. Groups from across Bristol will perform the brand new Theatre Uncut Power Plays. The event will be free and discussion encouraged.

Theatre Uncut aims to provoke debate and galvanise action by making new political theatre available for everyone, everywhere.
