The Watermill Theatre Presents First Actor-Musician Production of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC

By:
Following the outstanding success of past Sondheim productions at The Watermill Theatre, including the Tony award-winning Sweeney Todd which transferred to the West End and Broadway, The Watermill will present A Little Night Music as part of its 50th anniversary season, performed for the first time by a company of actor-musicians. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler the production will run from Thursday 27 July to Saturday 16 September. Booking opens Tuesday 18 April at 10am with booking now open for Friends of The Watermill.

A Little Night Music will be directed by Paul Foster whose Watermill credits include Tell Me On A Sunday and Laurel and Hardy, with award-winning Sarah Travis as musical supervisor whose previous Watermill productions include Sweeney Todd, Mack and Mabel and Pinafore Swing.

Foster says:

'The show is full of laughter and loss and second chances. The Watermill's unique, rural setting is a perfect place to tell this story which takes place over the course of a golden summer.'

Of her return to The Watermill, Travis says:

'With its 50th anniversary being celebrated this year, and with Sondheim's blessing to perform this masterpiece with a company of actor-musicians, coming back to work at The Watermill was a no-brainer!'

The role of Desirée Armfeldt will be played by Josefina Gabrielle (National Theatre, Menier Chocolate Factory, Sadlers Wells), with Alastair Brookshaw (Menier Chocolate Factory, ENO, Sadlers Wells) as Fredrik Egerman and Dillie Keane (Fascinating Aida - West End, national and international tours) as Madame Armfeldt. Other cast members are to be announced.

Based on Ingmar Bergman's Smiles on a Summer Night, A Little Night Music is a passionate story of intertwined love affairs, regret and longing centred on elegant actress Desirée Armfeldt, and her family and flirtations with a beautiful score that includes the iconic songs Send in the Clowns and A Weekend in the Country. It will be designed by David Woodhead with lighting designed by Howard Hudson, sound designed by Tom Marshall and choreography by Matt Flint.
