Do you remember the first mix-tape you made for that person you fancied or the one that sound-tracked a crushing heartbreak?
Music, Life and Love are remixed and remastered in TOOT'S, Be Here Now, a constantly surprising, occasionally chaotic and irreverently comic look at the soundtrack of the 1990s. This lively and original show celebrates the thrill of anticipation and 'music you can hold' and examines how it can seep into and influence our lives at key moments.
Be Here Now plays a limited run at Shoreditch Town Hall prior to a UK tour in Autumn.
TOOT will immerse you in a world of CDs, cassettes and minidiscs, rewinding, fast-forwarding and pausing fantasies, memories, the rawness of love and the music that defines it. Hit repeat and relive together the scenes you play over and over in your head, the potent moments you can't change - all set to a soundtrack of '90s classics.
Pumping nineties beats, suspect dance routines and angsty shoe-gazing combine to celebrate the irresistible power of pop, and examine how that song will forever ignite heady feelings of love lost and won.
TOOT is a trio of performer/directors Terry O'Donovan (Dante or Die), Stuart Barter (Left With Pictures) and Clare Dunn (Unpacked, Gecko) and producer Faith Dodkins (Il Pixel Rosso, The Plasticine Men). TOOT's performances put audiences at the heart of the work, combining one-on-one moments and collective participation in uplifting, multi-sensory performances rooted in the everyday. Dramaturgy by Ben Kidd. Set and Costume design by Florence McHugh, with lighting design by Joshua Pharo.
TOOT's first show, Ten Out of Ten, was originally commissioned by and programmed for three weeks to open the Beside Me season at Ovalhouse, London in 2012. It enjoyed a successful run as part of the Assembly Festival programme at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013 and has since toured nationally.
Be Here Now is an Ovalhouse seed commission and is supported by Shoreditch Town Hall, Cambridge Junction & Escalator Performing Arts.
