The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh runs 20 July - 3 September at the Main House
A terrific new cast including celebrated Irish actress Derbhle Crotty (Notes on a Scandal) joins Rosaleen Linehan as she reprises her acclaimed role in Joe Hill-Gibbins' production of Martin McDonagh's darkly comic play. Winner of the Evening Standard, Critics' Circle and Writers' Guild awards for Best New Play, The Beauty Queen of Leenane was an instant classic from its first performance. Martin McDonagh won the BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay in 2009 for his feature film debut In Bruges which he also directed. In 2006 he won an Oscar for his short film Six Shooter. His play The Pillowman won the 2004 Best Play Olivier Award and the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best New Foreign Play. Joe Hill-Gibbins recently directed The Glass Menagerie at the Young Vic where he is Deputy Artistic Director and his work also includes The Girlfriend Experience. His production of The Village Bike is soon to open at the Royal Court. Rosaleen Linehan has garnered great acclaim throughout her distinguished career on the New York, Dublin and London stage, including a Tony nomination for her performance in the Broadway debut of Dancing at Lughnasa. Her other credits include New Electric Ballroom (world tour), Long Day's Journey into Night (Gate Theatre Dublin) and Happy Days (Gate Theatre Dublin, NY, Almeida, Barbican - later reprising the role in Patricia Rozema's 2000 film). Derbhle Crotty‘s major Irish theatre credits include Katie Roche, Portia Coughlan, The Three Sisters, The Silver Tassie and The Gigli Concert. Her work with award-winning British directors includes Ian Rickson's The Weir and The Alice Trilogy (Royal Court) and Portia in Trevor Nunn's acclaimed The Merchant of Venice (NT). In 2006, she appeared in the Oscar-nominated feature film Notes on a Scandal. Frank Laverty will play Pato. His credits include The Rivals (Southwark Playhouse), A Whistle in the Dark (Royal Exchange) and extensive work for The Abbey Theatre and Druid Theatre Company. Johnny Ward completes the cast as Ray. His film work includes Kirsten Sheridan's upcoming film Dollhouse and the soon to be released This Must Be the Place with Sean Penn.
