The Rose Theatre is delighted to announce that artist and art director Su Blackwell will design her first stage production for the Rose later this year, The Snow Queen.

Born in Sheffield in 1975, Su lives in South London and works predominantly within the realm of paper. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art, Su has worked as an artist-in-residence, has exhibited fine-art at The Bronte Parsonage Museum in Haworth, West Yorkshire and more recently had her solo show Happily Ever After at Long and Ryle Gallery in London. She has been visiting lecturer at Canterbury School of Art, Sheffield Hallam University and Central St. Martin's School of Art.

Su's designs are used in gift cards produced by Roger la Borde, and her magical creations have reached far and wide. Su Blackwell Studios have collaborated with Nicole Farhi, worked on advertising campaigns for Pilsner Urquell, Crabtree and Evelyn, O2 and also created a beautiful Christmas window for Harvey Nichols.

Artistic Director of the Rose, Stephen Unwin added "I'm delighted that the remarkable Su Blackwell is designing The Snow Queen. Her book sculptures brilliantly capture the strange, mysterious, enchanted world of the fairy tale, and it's a huge pleasure to have her here designing her first stage production."

Su said "The Snow Queen is one of my favourite stories, and I love Charles Way's interpretation of it. When I was approached to design the sets for the Rose Theatre, it felt like a dream come true. My work is perfect for the stage, visually and conceptually and there could not be a more perfect production for me than The Snow Queen. It will be amazing to see my imagery scaled up beautifully with moving characters interacting within the whimsical paper world I create. It's wonderful to be given the opportunity to fully explore the various possibilities and nuances the Rose has to offer, in what promises to be a uniquely magical production."

Adapted from the story by Hans Christian Andersen and written by Charles Way, this charming tale of friendship sees the power of love triumph over wickedness, as Kai and Gerda embark on an epic journey to conquer the evil Snow Queen.

The Snow Queen will be directed by Natascha Metherell. Natascha recently directed a reading of Minotaur at Inner Temple Hall featuring Timothy West, Barber of Seville (Stanley Hall Opera), My Fifteen Minutes (Wimbledon Studio Theatre) and Contemporary Opera Showcase (National Opera Studio, London). She was Associate Director for the Rose Theatre productions of Treasure Island and Miss Julie.

The Snow Queen will play from Friday 2 December 2011 - Sunday 8 January 2012. The cast is yet to be announced.
