Sam Mendes to Direct KING LEAR At Royal National Theatre in 2012; Simon Russell Beale Stars

Sam Mendes will return to the theatre to direct a production of KING LEAR at the Royal National Theatre in 2012. The production will star Simon Russell Beale as King Lear. Mendes directed OTHELLO at the Royal National Theatre in 1998, the production also starrEd Simon.

Although no official dates have been set The Guardian reports the Theatre hopes to put the show on in late spring so it can be a part of the World Shakespeare Festival.

Mendes most recent project, the 23rd movie in the James Bond series has been indefinitely postponed after producers failed to close a deal with MGM. Mendes last directed on Broadway 2006's THE VIRTICAL HOUR starring JuliAnne Moore and Bill Nighy.

Mendes has won two Olivier Awards for his productions of THE GLASS MENAGERIE and COMPANY. Mendes won an Academy Award in 1999 for 'American Beauty' and was nominated for a Tony Award for his direction of the CABARET revival in 1998.
